Substack Newsletter #2

Hey Everyone,

It was feeling like that time again, and here I am with newsletter #2! It’s been a busy summer for all things Strangers. I finally got in the stock for Demon Summoner Gash Gash and The Hanging, fulfilled the Kickstarter and also pleased to say both books are also now officially on-sale!

I’ve been reaching out to retailers actively so there are a good amount of Strangers regular partners that have already picked up copies. If you’re near any of these places, definitely support our comic shop pals, if only to grab a new Strangers book, but hopefully something else as well.

or online from either Wig Shop or soon to come Domino Books! There will also be a couple international shops with stock in the next month or so; Gosh Comics in London or All The Problems In This World in Berlin.

The books, along with Rafael Zaiats’ Makinaphobe and Joel van der Knaap’s Fortress #4 will be hitting Lunar catalogs in October with plans to hit stores December 3rd. Order how you like, when you like, I’m just excited to get these two books out into the world.

They’ve also received a good amount of press lately as well- some good, some subjective!

What Else is New?

Outside of the two above books- Joel van der Knaap has been plugging away at getting Fortress out into the world! Issue #2 hit shops this week, and 3 will be coming in October, and #4 in the first week of December! If you’ve not seen the cover reveal for #4, it looks great- I’ll post a pic below. Fortress is one of my favorite ongoing series and it’s been a real joy to help get Joel more exposure into shops. I even saw that Fortress #1 was shouted out in Chip Zdarsky’s comic shop newsletter.

Ghoul Butcher should be arriving at the Lunar warehouses in the next few weeks. It’s gotten a little delayed due to my own fault, but it will be hitting shops sometime very soon! I’ll be making some posts when it is officially out. As previously mentioned, this will be more of a limited release than some newer Strangers titles but I intend to have a bit of stock for outside of shops.

Other than that, it’s been pretty much all eyes towards 2026. Manning Coe is working hard at the translations on our first manga title and will be quickly jumping to the second upon the firsts completion. Joel made an awesome cover for this first book, he got it approved by the creator with a few minor tweaks to come. I’ll post a little screen grab below- it might be an automatic giveaway for fans of his work, and hopefully it’s get some of you excited as well.

I made a post on socials, but the other title is getting a brand new cover by the original mangaka. He’s currently wrapping up a gallery exhibition in Tokyo so once that’s finished, he told me he’ll be starting on it. Maybe that’s a giveaway for those really locked into that world, he is quite involved on Instagram after all.

Speaking of foreign translations- it looks like the first draft of Ludovic Lalliat’s Akutézoïde is finished being translated. I’m hoping to get that book out at the top half of 2026 but still trying to sort out my year as a whole.

Hostile Planet is just about wrapped up, yes this time for real. Tom and I are waiting on the last 2 stories to come in and Tyler Landry, who is doing the cover, mentioned to me that he should hopefully have something finalized by mid October. That’s also when we’re planning to launch the Kickstarter. So yes, it’s really really real and I’m very excited.

A few other things are moving along that I’m not quite ready to talk about. After speaking with Justin Morales- we decided to forgo the second volume of The Bouledogue Barbarian and just put it out as 1 large graphic novel with a complete story. That should be an end of the year thing, if not closer to 2027.

I’m probably rambling a lot- it’s been a productive year, feeling like I got the wind back in my sails after a bit of burnout.

Upcoming Shows

Still a few more shows coming up before the end of the year! Thanks to everyone who stopped by our table at SPX. I was not able to make it as it falls on my wedding anniversary but thanks to my pal Matt Emmons for manning the fort and playing double duty all weekend. Hope you all are enjoying what you picked up! Here’s a list of where I will be and when!

Short Run - Seattle, WA - November 1, 2025: New show for me! I’ve only ever done 1 other show on the west coast and loved it. Short Run always seems like it’s the best time so I really can’t wait to be there. No mention of table numbers yet but I’ll post on the internet when I know!

Thought Bubble - Harrogate, UK - November 15 + 16, 2025:
Confirmed in attendance will be myself, Adam Falp, Tom Kneeshaw and Jordan Barry-Browne! We’ll have all the new titles, some back stock and if you want anything specific- shoot me an email or DM and I’ll make sure to bring it.

Denver Comics & Arts Festival - Denver, CO - December 6th, 2025:
Wig Shop Jeff, Karl Krumpholz and myself are back for year 3 of DECAF, the small press comic show we run in Denver. We’re a bit later than usual but it’s still happening. We were holding out for a potential new space but that didn’t pan out and we didn’t want to lose our flow so December it was. Contrary to popular belief- December can still be quite nice in Colorado.

Personal Musings

Once again, this is getting long but I figured I’d post a bit about what I’ve been reading/watching/all of that.

Not going to list everything I’ve watched/read in the past 4 months because that’s a lot but if you’re specifically curious about what I watch- you can follow me on Letterboxd.

I’ve been diving a bit deeper into the American New Wave period. Criterion put out this 70’s thriller list that sort of kicked off the binge. Lot of great movies I’d already seen but some that were new to me. Couple new watches for me that really stood out were Paul Schrader’s Blue Collar (1978) which might be one of the best movies about American labor movements we’ve ever had, and Dennis Hopper’s Out of the Blue (1980). Lot of trigger warnings on that movie, it’s a real gut punch by the end though. Maybe a one and done watch despite it’s brilliance.

Before that American New Wave period, I was deep in a handover era Hong Kong movie kick. Some of the big standouts from that binge were the very underseen thriller Beyond Hypothermia (1996)the Chow Yun-fat led Full Contact (1992) and the legendary Police Story (1985) Lastly, saw this mid 00’s Johnnie To film Sparrow (2008) about a group of pick-pocketers that more often feels like choreographed dance than watching thieves operate. Truly beautiful camera work from one of the best to ever do it.

In terms of reading- still lots of manga. I just finished the 6th volume of Keigo Shinzo’s ongoing series Hirayasumi, after reading his now completed Tokyo Alien Bros. All very light hearted slice of life comics, nice easy reading. Also finally sat and read panpanya’s Guyabano Holiday. More lighthearted slice of life, can’t wait for her third book to finally come out.

On the other end, I’m several volumes into this science fiction/social thriller called The Darwin Incident. It’s about an animal liberation terrorist group and a half chimp/half human named Charlie. It’s kind of silly but a lot of fun.

The final thing that I can recall reading Tsutomu Nihei’s new series Tower Dungeon. He’s one of my all time favs so I’m psyched this is finally getting translated.

That’s all I got for now. I’ll probably make another one of these around October when we’re ready to launch the Hostile Planet Kickstarter.

It’s an especially weird world right now, be kind to one another.
